MERCY

words and music by Kasey Anderson

prophets shuffling down the boardwalk
silver bootheels on the concrete, they never make a sound
people shouting from the rooftops
you’re either ready for the righteous or you’re headed underground
now there’s a crowd around the gallows
everybody talking hard, vultures about to feed
me, i been staying in the shadows
doesn’t matter who you are, you’re gonna wind up on your knees
down on your knees
yeah, you better get on your knees
start asking for mercy
have a little mercy on me

she was living in the basement
she said, “ain’t nobody fearless when they’re standing in the dark”
and, “honey, i ain’t much for chasin
so you can go ahead and run, you won’t get very far”
she caught me in the bathroom
i was covering up the mirrors, tracing circles on the wall
she said, “i knew i had to have you
boy, you seen the glory, now you’re gonna see the fall”
and i was falling
falling down
falling down begging for mercy
have a little mercy on me

she said, “it’s alright, it’s alright
it’s alright, it’s alright
it’s alright, it’s gonna be alright
just let me stay with you tonight”

she started reading from the bible
she set loose the dogs and the demons i’d locked up
it’s a question of survival
maybe you just need a taste, i never get enough
now, some people they get worried
start looking in the stars and waiting for a sign
baby, i ain’t a hurry
as long as i keep moving, i know i’m gonna find
yeah, i know i’m gonna find
i’m gonna find myself
i’m gonna find myself some mercy
so have a little mercy on me

just a little
just a little
just a little
have a little mercy on me
